Collins Drive and Water Race Loop

Collins Drive and Water Race Loop

Beginning a few minutes walk from Broken Hills Campsite, it is best to walk this loop anti-clockwise.

Passing by a swimming hole, the track begins on your right, with the climb starting immediately and continuing for approximately an hour. After a short descent, the track reaches the 500m shaft of Collins Drive, the remains of a fruitless attempt to establish a quartz mine.

Before embarking on the 15-minute walk through the tunnel, be sure to step inside without your light to see Glow Worms a short distance from the entrance. A torch is essential to making a thorough journey.
The tunnel is mostly boardwalked, virtually eliminating trip hazards, and the ceiling is high enough to walk upright in most parts, though a torch is essential.

Upon exiting the tunnel, the track descends towards the water race track. The gentle grade of the Water Race Track follows the alignment of a former water race through two more tunnels (no torch required) while passing various small mine workings. All dangerous workings are boarded up for safety.

Further information on this track is available on the Department of Conservation website, here.
