Kauaeranga Kauri Trail (Pinnacles Walk)
This iconic walk, steeped in history, is an accessible overnight tramp for families or a full-day walk for the fit and experienced.
Beginning at the end of the road in the Kauaeranga Valley, Shortly after, a side track (2 minutes) takes you to a viewpoint for Billy Goat Falls, officially the highest waterfall on the North Island. Beyond the junction, the track begins a steady ascent, following a well-defined former pack horse track.
The track features extensive rock cobblestone work, and most water crossings are bridged or alternative routes in the event of flooding.
Shiortly before the large (78 bunk) Pinnacles Hut, approximately 2-3 hours walk, the track plateaus, revealing expansive views of the valley below and the pinnacles in the distance.
From the hut, the track, a mixture of steps and ladders, climbs steeply for appoximately an hour to the Pinnacles viewing platform . On a clear day, the views are spectacular.
Tip: Get up there early if you want to avoid the crowds.
Important notes. Pinnacles Hut and Campsite bookings are required and can be booked here.
