Ohura
The town that the Forgotten World Highway forgot. Once a bustling coal mining settlement and later a prison, Ohura is now reminiscent of a ghost town.
Sporting a Cosmopolitan Club, a Mexican Food cart and a school, the majestic main street is a time capsule. The facades of former stores keep the history alive, including a fading, former Ford Motor Company dealership and general store.
A stroll around the town and down the side streets and discover a museum, a former bowling club, and arguably the stoutest railway underpass in NZ.
What Ohura lacks in population, it more than makes up for with old-time charm.
