Lake Rotopiko (Serpentine Lakes)
Lake Rotopiko is a group of 3 peat lakes in the Ohaupo area with origins that date back to the ice age. East Lake is the smaller and best example, surrounded by a 1.4km predator-proof fence with minimal invasive aquatic plants.
A flat, well-graded track circles the lake offering great views and an accessible walk for the whole family, complete with interactive educational stations at regular intervals. The path continues through a strand of giant Kahikatea ahead of completing the loop back to the car park.
Our visit took us to East Lake. Future trips will see us explore the other two lakes, with the bio updated accordingly.
