The Old Coach Road
Ohakune Old Coach Rd
This dual-use track closely follows the historic Coach Road that once joined the rail heads prior to the completion of the Main Trunk Line in 1908.
The easy-to-navigate trail passes through a mixture of farmland and native bush, peppered with interpretation panels, points of interest and endless photo opportunities.
Part of the Mountains to Sea trail, the gem in the crown of this trail is the restored Hapawhenua viaduct. After crossing the old viaduct, take a seat [or use the conveniently located loo] and take in the scenery, including the new Hapuawhenua viaduct. Train spotters will be happy to know that between 11:30 and 1 pm (approx), three trains will pass over the viaduct, so have your camera ready.
The 15-kilometre (each way) trail can be walked or cycled from either end, with shuttle services and bicycle hire available from several outlets in Ohakune. Bookings essential.
The Hapuawhenua viaduct (and old rail tunnel) are closest to the Marshalls Rd car park, approx. a 90-minute walk.
For those wishing to complete the entire trail, Starting at Horopito and finishing at marshals rd (or continuing into Ohakune Junction) means you begin at the highest point, making for a slightly easier day.
Feel energetic? Start at Horopoto and cycle to Ohakune for lunch at one of the many cafes before cycling back. Approx. 40km in total (including the short ride to Ohakune CBD).
The grade 3 track offers a mix of well-maintained gravel, dirt (shallow mud puddles in winter) and the famous “cobblestones”.

Getting there:
Horopito: Turn off SH4 into Matapuna Rd, Car parking is available across the railway line.
Ohakune: From Ohakune, head towards the railway station at Ohakune Junction, at the foot of the Ohakune Mountain Rd. Ample parking is available from here, or continue to follow the markers to the Marshalls Rd car park.
